Situated in the Cedar Rapids/Marion metropolitan area the Marion Independent School District provides a strong community school for our students while maintaining challenging curricular and co-curricular programming. Our district serves over 2000 students and combines the many advantages of a smaller school without sacrificing the quality opportunities afforded by our suburban setting. The Marion Independent School District is proud to serve our students and community!

Vernon Middle School

Vernon Middle School is located two blocks south of the main business district in Marion, Iowa. It is a middle school with sixth through eighth grade in the building. There are nearly 450 students and over 60 staff members in the building. The building under went an extensive remodeling in 1974 when a new gymnasium and media center were added to the structure. In 1996 all classrooms in the building were wired for telephones and Internet access. In 1999 a new Science Lab and a new Industrial Technology Lab were added.

The Mission of our school is "for all students to learn, achieve, and succeed." Our teachers, staff, and parents are dedicated to making this a quality school where all students feel they belong and experience success in their learning. Each student knows the mission statement and random checks are conducted regularly allowing students to recite it. Our checks show the student success rate has been 90% or above since the second month of this last school year.

Francis Marion is one of the few 4th and 5th grade schools in the state of Iowa. We are the only intermediate school in the nation named after the famous Revolutionary War General, Francis Marion. Learning about this heritage is integrated into our social studies, science, reading, art, and music programs. We are very proud of our school and what we can offer our students. Curriculum offerings and special events are the result of concentrated efforts from all our staff to provide an educational environment made special for 4th and 5th graders.

Emerson Elementary

Welcome to Emerson Elementary School in Marion, Iowa. Emerson is located on the north end of the Marion Independent School District with a current enrollment of 207 kindergarten through third grade students. Each grade level is divided into two sections with an average of twenty-two students in each class. The students here enjoy music and physical education programs twice a week and art once a week. The school also provides a number of remedial, special education and gifted programs for our students.

At Emerson we believe it takes a whole village to educate a child. The entire staff, community, and especially parents are made to feel welcome, important and responsible for the education of each child. Our staff believes in teaching to all children. The staff is dedicated and knowledgeable in working with diverse learners. Our goal is that all children learn to their full potential and that we provide the opportunity for this learning to take place through a hands on and integrated approach to teaching and learning.

The parents and community of Emerson Elementary are highly supportive of the school. We have many volunteers who come to our building on a regular basis. Volunteers range from high school students to senior citizens of our community. They provide tutoring experiences to children, support to the classroom teachers and fund-raising activities to help meet the needs of the school.
